The WABA (World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action) website has information for this year and from years past. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) is a global network of individuals and organisations concerned with the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding worldwide based on the Innocenti Declaration, the Ten Links for Nurturing the Future and the WHO/UNICEF Global Strategy for Infant and Young Child Feeding. Its core partners are International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN), La Leche League International (LLLI), International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA), Wellstart International, Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine (ABM) and LINKAGES. WABA is in consultative status with UNICEF and an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC).

World Breastfeeding Week, 2007 World Breastfeeding Week Drayton Valley, AB, 2007 Twelve dozen “Breast Cupcakes” were delivered to - Hospital and Health Unit Staff - Five Pharmacies - Three Physician offices - Three Dietitians - Staff at radio station, newspaper, Nutters and Health Food store Information on the theme and “The Risks of Formula” were delivered to each site. Table toppers were also left at each site. As well, WBW promotional items were presented to Health Unit and Hospital staff. Door hangers, pens, book marks, pamphlets for mothers, family members and health professionals, were also left at each site. Posters on tummy size from Ontario Best Start Program were provided for each maternity room as well as DVD – “Follow Me Mum” were provided for staff/mother use. Two presentations were made – four nursing staff participated in a session based on the ILCA Power Point presentation “Welcome Baby Safety”. Another three hour presentation to 10 second year nursing students included the WBW information. Pharmacies were provided with information needed to purchase “Medications and Mothers Milk”, “Non Prescription Drugs for the Breastfeeding Mother”,and “The Nursing Mother’s Herbal”. Nutters and Health 4-U were provided with information on “The Nursing Mother’s Herbal.” The local newspapers provided press coverage prior to the Breastfeeding Challenge. Fourteen mothers and 15 infants/children participated. A reporter joined in briefly at the Breastfeeding Support Group and during the nursing student presentation. A second article was written based on the challenges mothers experience breastfeeding in our community. The “Joys of Breastfeeding” children’s book display was set up for the Quintessence Breastfeeding Challenge. Several books by Canadian authors were well received as door prizes by participants. Last but not least, several families shared a pot luck supper for all family members to enjoy!
